Iago is upset with Othello because he chose Cassio over him. Othello saw his fighting skills but still chose Cassio, i guy who knows numbers with no fighting experience. He plans to take advantage of Othello.
ReplyDeleteBrabantio is upset with Othello because he believes he has poisoned, drugged, or used black magic on his daughter, Desdemona. He says that his daughter wouldn't reject the young men of Venice for a black thing like Othello,v an obvious sign of interracial marriage issues. He plans to have Othello arrested.
Roderigo is upset with Othello because he loves Desdemona but can't have her.She is married to Othello but he can't have her. He plans to take her away from Othello.

I agree with what you are saying here, but Barbantio was also upset with Desdemona because she ran away and got married with out her fathers permission which was not normal in this time period because the father usually arranged marriages in this place in time. (H. Kimble 1)
DeleteIn Act I many characters are introduced. The reader quickly understands the main character is Othello, who is quite a popular person to be enraged with. The first person the reader reads about is Iago, one of the men who work for/with Othello. Iago is upset with Othello because the job of lieutenant recently became available, and Iago is by far the most qualified person for the job, or so he says, but he doesn't receive the position, Michael Cassio does. This infuriates Iago, so Iago decides to help get more people mad at Othello. Iago goes to Othello's new, secretive wife's father, Brabantio, who is an important and powerful citizen of Venice. Iago share the news that Othello has married Brabantio's daughter, Desdemona, without asking or telling Brabantio. Now, both Iago and Brabantio are furious with Othello. Brabantio plans to send Othello to jail and possibly kill him, but Iago has a much sneakier, complex scheme. Iago wants to sabotage Othello's marriage by creating rumors about Desdemona's faithfulness to Othello. (B.Bair 7)
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you are saying, I got the same thing from Act I. Iago gets very mad and wants to take it out on Othello and pretty much do to Othello worse than what was done to himself. He wants revenge and for him to feel pain and betrayal like Iago felt when he wasn't chosen for the lieutenant.
DeleteIn the first act of Othello, we learn that Iago is upset with Othello because he “chose” Cassio over him although Iago has the better fighting skills out of the two he still chose Cassio with little knowledge of fighting to be the lieutenant. Iago is furious at this decision and he wants to turn more people against Othello as well. To do this he goes to Barbantio who is Desdemona’s father, Iago tells him that Othello married his daughter without asking or telling him. With that being done, now Barbantio and Iago are very mad with Othello. Iago wants to mess up their marriage and create lies that Desdemona is messing around on him, while Barbantio wants to put him in jail and perhaps kill him.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what your opinion. The characters are introduced and the conflict of the play begins. Iago just wants revenge on Othello while Brabantio just wants him dead. It's amazing that at the very start of the play, we already have this amount of people that hate Othello. I hope nothing happens to him and Iago's plan will fail. Othello seems like a great character and I would hate to see a horrible tragedy happen to him. (C.Hill.1st period)
DeleteSince it is Act I, all of the characters are being introduced and cues for their personalities are set. At first Iago expresses his feelings on how he believes he should receive the job of lieutenant, however Othello gave the position to Cassio. This creates a growing vengeance on Othello, which leads to Iago seeking revenge. In order to do so, Iago goes to Brabanizo, the father of Othello's newly wed who is also of high power, and pretends to be robbed. In doing so, he is setting a situation for Othello and Desdemona to be caught. Afterwards, Brabanizo is also very upset with Othello. Brabanito plans to take Othello and punish him, however Iago seeks to make him suffer with a more elaborate plan by tearing the marriage apart and starting lies to separate them. By the end of Act I, Othello has characters out to get him.

DeleteIn Act 1 the reader is introduced to several characters that do not like Othello and want to cause him some kind of harm. The first character is Iago. He is upset with Othello, because he did not pick him for the open lieutenant position. Iago felt that he was much more qualified for the position than the other man was, and he wants to cause Othello much misery for his decision by helping others cause hardship in Othello's life. The next character is Roberigo. He is friends with Iago and they are both working together to cause problems in Othello's life. He is upset with Othello, because he married Desdemona. Both of these go to Desdemona's father, Barbantio, to tell him of the couples secret marriage. Once Barbantio finds out he starts to hunt down Othello to send him to jail or to possibly have him killed for "tricking" his daughter into marrying him. Then Desdemona shows up and proves that she actually married Othello out of love and stops her father from punishing him. His plan does not work, so Barbanito accepts the marriage unhappily. Also, Iago and Robergio realize that they need to come up with a more disastrous plan to break apart the couple and begin to spread rumors of infidelity about the marriage. (A.Lee 6)
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with you. There are obvious tensions that each of these characters have with Othello that want to lead him to his downfall. Roderigo and Iago both try to push Othello out for their benefit or as revenge. I also agree that they try to cause deeper afflictions and tensions to essentially ruin Othello.
DeleteI completely agree there is obvious discord between the three characters and Othello. They all want to lead Othello to his demise. I also agree that as a result of plans failing they turn to a disastrous approach to ruin his life. (C. Drucker 1)
DeleteIn Act I of Othello, readers are introduced to three characters who are already upset with Othello. The first character that is upset with Othello is Iago. Iago has a grudge against Othello for not appointing him as lieutenant. Readers then find out about rumors saying that Othello has been sleeping with Iago's wife. It is for these reasons that Iago is furious with Othello and wants to exact his revenge upon him. Roderigo is upset with Othello due to jealousy. Othello is married to Desdemona, a woman that Roderigo feels is too good for Othello and belongs with him. Roderigo and Iago concoct a plan that will get Desdemona to leave Othello and be with Roderigo. Brabantio is the third character in the first act who is upset with Othello. Brabantio is Desdemona's father who was not previously informed about his daughter being wed to Othello. Brabantio believes that Othello had cast a charm that made his daughter want to sneak around with him. Brabantio then gathers a group of people to help him hunt and kill Othello for his alleged crimes. However, when Desdemona admits that Othello and she are wed, he accepts the marriage and his anger with Othello seems to soften. (M. McDonald 6)
ReplyDeleteI gathered that as well. I can't believe Iago would stoop that low. Not to mention, Roderigo seeking to claim Desdemona as his own. There's so much drama. I'm just happy Brabantio listened to his daughter and accepted her marriage to Othello, I feel like that's the only good thing that happened. (K.Mitchell 6)
DeleteAct I of Othello opens with Iago and Roderigo discussing Othello without saying his name. Iago is discontent with Othello because he chose another less qualified soldier for the position Iago was aiming for. Iago plans to aid in every plan set against Othello. Roderigo is wildly envious of Othello's marriage to Desdemona. He seeks to uproot their relationship and take Desdemona for himself. With these hostile feelings, both Iago and Roderigo set off to Brabantio, Desdemona's father, to alert him of his daughter marriage to the Moor. Upon discovering his daughter's marriage to Othello, Brabantio aims to have Othello prosecuted to the highest degree on the charge of theft. Brabantio truly believes Othello is guilty of coaxing his daughter into marriage through magic or drugs Until, Desdemona professes her love for Othello, convincing her father that Othello is innocent. Reluctantly, Brabantio accepts his daughter's marriage to Othello. (K.Mitchell 6)
ReplyDeleteIn the first act of Othello, we are very quickly introduced to three people who are upset with or angry at Othello. The first person we meet is Iago. Iago was meant to be the right hand to Othello, but Othello appointed someone else, which infuriates Iago and causes him to turn against Othello. It is also revealed to the readers shortly after we learn about Iago, that we learn that Roderigo is also upset with Othello because Othello is married to the woman that Roderigo had feelings for and he thought that Desmendona was too good for Othello. Finally, we learn that the third person who is angry towards Othello, is Barbantio, who is Desmendona's fathers. Barbantio is angry with Othello because Othello secretly married Desmendona without Barbantio knowing or approving. All three men have one common link, which is that they seek for Othello to suffer. (H. Kimble 1)
ReplyDeleteIn Act I, there are many people who seem to be very angry with Othello. First of all you have Iago, who is mad because Othello chose another man, Cassio, to be his lieutenant instead of Iago so Iago decides to seek revenge on Othello by pretending to be friends with him while secretly trying to overtake his position as Moor. Brabantio is angry with Othello because Othello secretly married his daughter Desdemona and Brabantio believes that he tricked her into marrying him with black magic so he tries to have Othello put in jail but then learns that his daughter really does love Othello and disowns her. Roderigo is jealous of Othello because he claims that he is in love with Desdemona so he makes a plan to get rich so that Desdemona will leave Othello for Roderigo.

There are three characters upset with Othello in Act 1. The first character upset with Othello is Iago. He angry because Othello did not assign him the job as lieutenant. He ended up choosing Cassio over him even though his fighting skills were better. Iago gets revenge on him by trying to sabotage his relationship with his secret wife, Desdemona. He tells Desdemona's father, Barbantio, about their marriage and this causes him to become furious at Othello also. He panics and then calls for a search party to find Desdemona. When Othello and Barbantio finally meet, Barbantio does not believe that they came together naturally. He believes that Othello cast a spell on Desdemona to make her fall in love with him. He then orders a group of men to kill Othello for his "crimes", but Desdemona admits to falling in love with Othello because of his stories and Barbantio unhappily accepts their marriage. The final person angry with Othello is Roderigo. He is jealous of Othello because of his relationship with Desdemona. He gets revenge by helping Iago carry out his sinister plan.

ReplyDeleteIago has hatred for Othello due to Othello being chosen by Cassio over himself for a promotion. Iago plans to hurt Othello by bringing Othello's secrets to light, most notably his marriage to Desdemona. Roderigo, an ally of Iago, hates Othello due to the fact that he desires to be with Desdemona himself. Iago and himself develop a plan to instead have Desdemona become romantically involved with Roderigo instead as a way to hurt Othello. Brabantio, father of Desdemona, has bad blood towards Othello because he believes Othello used a form of magic/spells/etc to make his daughter marry him. When he becomes aware of this, he rallies townspeople together to murder Othello. (A. Osborne 1.)
ReplyDeleteIn Act I, readers are introduced to several characters with predetermined biases against Othello and one character that develops a conflict with him. Iago's is the first conflict the introduced in the play. Iago, an experienced military man, becomes jealous when Othello chooses another man as his lieutenant. His bitterness towards Othello is only encouraged by rumors that his wife has been sleeping with Othello. Later into the Act, Roderigo's dilemma is presented. Having asked Brabantio for his daughter's hand and being rejected, Roderigo is upset to learn that Othello married the daughter so easily. This marriage introduces us to the third and final character with a bone to pick with Othello, Brabantio. Othello and Desdemona, Brabantio's daughter, were married without her father's blessing; leading to his outrage when he finally learns of the situation. Brabantio is reluctant to believe his daughter married the Moor of her own free will, even after the two explain how they came to love each other, and refuses to allow Desdemona to stay in his house after the scandal. (E. Stacey 7)
ReplyDeleteIn Act I, Iago is outraged at Othello for making Cassio his lieutenant. Iago plans to serve under him with manipulation and deceit to lead Othello to his downfall. The second character Roderigo is introduced with a hatred for two reasons. He is somewhat swayed as a result of the conversation he shared with Iago and because of his crush, Brabantio's daughter, had fled off with Othello. He plans to tell Brabantio in the hope that he will prefer Roderigo and push Othello out of the picture. Brabantio is the final character who is upset with Othello. He is upset because his daughter ran off in romantic affairs with a black man. This causes immediate tension because it will bring great dishonor to his family. He plans to set after Othello and get his daughter back. Perhaps he may even want Othello to be slain. (C. Drucker 1)
ReplyDeleteAct 1 consists of several important parts. One of the people that are very upset with Othello is Iago. He's upset because he was passed up a position for another less experienced individual named Cassio. Iago plans to destroy Othello's life by exposing his marriage do Desdemona. After that he brings another that is upset with Othello and his name is Roderigo. Roderigo is upset with Othello because he was rejected by Desdemona's father to marry her. The men go to Desdemonas father, Barbantio to expose the truth. Barbantio is upset because he didn't know his daughter married him without consent. All three men confront Othello about the marriage and try to have him killed. When the plan falls through they begin to create a new plan for destroying his life. (M. Scott 6)
