In Katherine's closing speech, the main idea is that a woman needs to tend and obey her man. She explains how Pertruchio's "taming" towards her has made her a better woman today. That woman are weak and need taming in their life. (C.Grant 2)
ReplyDeleteI find this to be the one of the most shocking parts of the whole play. Her speaking a whole speech of how to rightfully treat ones husband.

I agree with both of y'all if she would have had a speech like this in the beginning of the play it would have been filled with how much men push women around and how she wasn't gonna stand for it and others shouldn't either. (A. Phillips 2)
DeleteI Katherine's closing speech, the main idea is that a woman needs to tend and obey her man. She explains how Pertruchio's "taming" towards her has made her a better woman today. That woman are weak and need taming in their life. Most might have been surprised to hear this statement come out of Kate's mouth but, i feel since Pertruchio has came into her life it has indeed changed her. Even though she is more of a follower towards her man, she is not a hotheaded, tempered woman like how she used to be. She truly has changed for the better maybe. (C. Grant 2)
ReplyDelete"Maybe" true though. we don't actually know if she truly changed. If she did changed for the "better" I hope it was her actually decision and not Pertruchio's harsh ways of "taming" her.

I believe that Kate has become brainwashed. Her speech sounds rehearsed and like she had it memorized, so maybe she has not changed as much as everyone thinks she has. However, I do believe that is a good thing that she is not like she used to be so her "change" may have been for the better. (R. Luxemburger 7)
DeleteI agree with Rory that it seems like a form of brainwashing. It's amazing how a person can change when they are starved and sleep deprived. Kate probably has been wiped of why she ever acted like she used to, and she wants to encourage the other women to obey their husbands as faithfully as she, but they didn't go through the same things that she did.

The point of Katherine's speech is to outwardly prove to everyone at the banquet that she is a brand new person. She states how a wife must be obedient to her husband and listen to what he has to say seeing how he's the man of the household. This speech could be taken in two different ways. One is she doesn't believe what she's saying, she just wants to please her husband and everyone else there. The other is that she has actually changed and believes that the social role of a wife is to be obedient to her husband. (1.S.Rice)
ReplyDeleteIn Katherine's ending speech she declares that for a women to be with her husband there needs to be an understanding of dominance in the relationship. As within this relationship during such time period men are on a higher hierarchy. Women should only do what the stereotypical women should be doing like cooking, cleaning, knitting, etc.. rather then trying to fight back and have some control within the relationship. With such statement Katherine being who she is/was was shocking to everyone, how could someone possibly change this much? She could have been possibly saying words that were false to her own self but with Pertruchio's treatment she forced herself to say that rather she believed it or not proving that the "taming" was a success.

Katherine's speech changed how everyone ever looked at her. It showed that she was a completely different person. She wasn't the shrew anymore. She was saying that wives need to obey their husbands because they care and protect them, so in return the wives do what the husbands ask. So one point would be that she has become a better person/wife. The other point would be she doesn't agree with what she is saying but is doing it because she is scared of Pertruchio and wants to make the people at the banquet think she's different but she might not be after all. The last 2 lines wrap the whole play. "(Hortensio) Now, go thy ways, thou hast tamed a curst shrew." and "(Lucentio) Tis a wonder, by your leave, she will be tamed so." and they mean to say something like Congratulations, it's amazing that she let herself be tamed.

I definitely agree. When she started saying how women should obey their husbands, everyone realized how Petruchio tamed her and it changed all of their views of her. Considering that she was a total shrew before that would not listen to anyone, everyone was completely shocked.

Kate's final speech may be considered incredibly sexist and demeaning. However, the main purpose of the speech is to demonstrate her true 180 degree turn in character. Kate, definitely the most dynamic character of the play, has transitioned from unsociable shrew, to reluctant wife, to model spouse. While the main idea of her speech demonstrates the model woman of the time period, I believe that it does a much better job of demonstrating a major theme of the play, anyone can become a different person if they truly want to. Kate is tired of being treated as an almost second class citizen and realizes her life will be much better if she sticks to the norm. 1.j. DiSario
ReplyDeleteThe main idea of Kate's closing speech is that a women should obey her man as her Lord and never be disrespectful towards them, because they know what is best. She says that disobeying your man diminishes your beauty, ruins your reputation, and makes you in no way attractive. Kate also says that husbands do so much for the wives like protect them, keep them company, and all they want is obedience. According to her, the women owe the men simple obedience and respect in return for all that they do to provide and take care of the women. Kate shares that she has finally come to her senses and that the rest of them should, too.

I think that her speech at the end was the cause of either what you said about her changing and coming to her senses, or that she is lying and pretending to be "tamed" and is just secreting waiting to turn back into the shrew everyone hates.

The point of Katherine's speech is to tell all the women why they should obey their husbands. She explains how her taming has made her a better person and it has benefitted her for good. Some people think that this speech is fake and she does't believe a thing she's saying, while other's believe that she has truly changed and means every bit of it. (A. McIntyre. 1)
ReplyDeleteThe main idea of Kate’s closing speech is to show how women are nothing without men. A woman’s only job is to obey her husband. Women are not smart, they’re just pretty. She believes, that all women need a man to guide them. Women owe everything to their husbands and their debt can never be paid off. Women are weak and they belong below their husbands feet. (C.Gunn 2)
ReplyDeleteIn Part 2 of Act V, Katherine's speech explains that a wife should be loyal and obedient to their husband. She also wanted to portray to the people that she was not the woman they knew from the past. The people weren't expecting to hear that a woman needs to tend to her husband, though. They knew she was wild in the past and were confused as to what happened to change her the way it did. (1 Z. Plemons)
ReplyDeleteI believe that the main idea of Katherine's speech is that women are to fulfill their roles of being submissive to their husbands. She says "Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper, Thy head, thy sovereign, one that cares for thee, And for thy maintenance commits his body"(Act V, Scene II, 155-157). This means that her husband is her lord and her life and he protects her, so why should she not support him and do what he says. This common theme is shown throughout her whole speech. She even reprimands her sister and the widow for not being submissive to their husbands. Her speech could be seen as an act of defeat because she seems tamed. She does not react rudely to anyone and is basically not her normal self anymore. Her speech just shows that men have a power over women that will eventually control them. This defeat may have been from the fact that she realized that it would be easier to just submit to him than keep fighting. Therefore, she had to find a silver lining since this would be her life from now on. (R. Luxemburger 7)
ReplyDeleteThis post definitely just opened my eyes. I really did not think about how she supports him so much because of his role also in this society. Like you said the men are the provided and protectors so it does make sense to fulfill his needs and desires including by not talking back and obeying. Also, how you said "This defeat may have been from the fact that she realized that it would be easier to just submit to him than keep fighting" I feel as Katherine already knew she could never win against Pertruchio so why bother fighting back so much when its easier to just obey him. Just like in the end he was so pleased so she was rewarded. She probably figured if she continues to obey him the abuse will stop and they can truly be happy together. (C. Grant 2)
DeleteThe main idea of Katherine's speech is to show everyone that she was obedient to her husband Pertruchio. She speaks about how he has changed her so much and how she is si different than earlier in the book. She states that all women should be obedient to their man, as he is the authority of the house. (K. Small 6th).
ReplyDeleteKate's speech at the end of Act 5 shows how she has been tamed by Petruchio. Her speeches' main theme is that women should look up to their husbands' as the all powerful lord that they are. Women are the be grateful for everything that the man gives them (clothes, a warm bed, food, luxuries, etc) and give them everything that ask for in return. Kate shows a true 360. She goes from the wild crazy shrew of the town that people were afraid of to the submissive and tamed wife.

Kate's speech in the end was almost perfectly executed and done in a way that could lead readers to think it was highly rehearsed and that she is definitely either brainwashed or forced to do what she is doing. the speech is completely different from what readers would expect at the beginning of the play and seems to go against all of Kate's previous views. it is full of her new opinion on how women should obey there husbands and do everything they are told all the time. it is a complete 180 from the beginning of the play.(A. Phillips 2)
ReplyDeleteKate's closing speech is to say that she is totally devoted to her husband. She says she once was a shrew but knows how to act now. She encourages Bianca and the widow to follow her lead toward their husbands as well. She says she know acknowledges women need to be tamed and that they are weak without their husband. She says that being obedient to her husband is a small price to pay for the great debt a wife is in to her husband. I would interpret this speech as her throwing in the towel. She is fully submissive to Petruchio after this speech.
