  2. The three relationships in this book show a lot of emotions and feelings. First, Bianca and Lucentio's relationship is fresh and romantic. It's real and intense. His love for Bianca is so deep that if he cannot have her he will die. While Pertruchio and Kate's relationship is brutal and cruel. Theirs no real love in this. Pertruchio is in it for the fortune while Kate just wants to married. So they deal with each others aggressiveness and disrespect. Then theirs Gremio and Hortensio. At first they were enemies but the rejection of Bianca builds their friendship. And Hortension ends up marrying a widow later on in the story. I feel Shakespeare was trying to show you how different relationships between different types of people can turn out. One may turn out into a true lie story while another can be a total disaster an another can end very normally. (C. Grant 2)

    1. I agree with, " I feel Shakespeare was trying to show you how different relationships between different types of people can turn out". Not one relationship is the same. Everyone has different attitudes either if they aren't good or they are good. Also maybe he was trying to get people during that time period to connect with how their relationships were. (1 D.Bonea)

  3. The bet takes place at Bianca's banquet for her wedding . Many begin to tease Petruchio because he has a shrew of a wife. He makes a bet with all of them saying that whoever has the most obedient wife will win some money. Everyone thinking Kate is still a shrew takes him up on his offer, but when Petruchio calls for his wife she comes running. All the other wives ignore their husbands leaving Petruchio the winner of the bet. Kate even begins a speech about how women should obey their husbands to prove everyone she is not a shrew. 4. The case of the mistaken identity was caused by Lucentio who was trying to capture Bianca's heart. Him changing his identity caused a shift in all identity's that were apart of his scheme. One of those being his own fathers. Wanting to get married to Bianca as soon as possible he needed someone in his fathers stead to bless the marriage between them. But since he wasn't there a merchant stood in as Vincentio tricking everyone into thinking it was the real Vincentio. Once the real Vincentio arrived he was told that he was an imposter causing him to become angry which lead to him beating Gremio and because of that he would be taken to jail. Preceding after that Lucentio finally came out about the false identities and his father was free to go.

    1. i agree with your description of the mistaken identity, however I believe that Vincentio and Baptista really were the ones affected by this whole story. Both were lied to, and even after Lucentio came clean about the whole situation, the fathers both should have been mad and denied the marriages to happen. I think that this story should have had a different ending with Luncentio and Bianca's marriage to not be real because the real Vincentio never really blessed the marriage.

  5. The bet that Pertruchio made to Hortensio was that his wife was the most obedient, and if he was right he was owed 20 crowns. Pertruchio calls Kate and she comes running, unlike the other wives who don't even pay attention to their husbands. He tells her to get the other wives and she does. Even Baptista couldn't believe that was his daughter. Pertruchio then tells Kate to give a speech to the other disobedient wives; and Kate does exactly that. Her speech is the longest one in the play and she tells them about how a wife needs to be obedient to their husbands and do every thing they ask. Everyone ends up so shocked they couldn't believe she was ever the shrew. (1 D.Bonea)

    1. Also with that, I was a little surprised that throughout this whole book Baptista, her own father did not speak up about the taming of Kate at all let alone the bet that they made while he was present. It really shows how in this time of era things were so different. The wives had no type of say so and nobody defended them including their own blood. Its pretty pathetic and disrespectful. As to this day in age, no normal father would allow a group of men to try and use abuse to tame a female or even watch them make bets about their daughters in front of them. (C. Grant 2)

  6. The bet takes place after Petruchio and Kate become married. While at the wedding for Bianca Petruchio is shamed due to his terror of a wife. Petruchio then decides to place a bet between Lucentio and Hortensio who do not yet realize that Kate has changed her hellish ways. Petruchio however ends up winning his bet when first Bianca refues to heed the call of Lucentio, then Hortensio's wfe denies his reuest as well. When she is sent for however Katherine comes immediately. This makes hortensio the winner but to show the he truly has tamed the shrew he sends Kate to go out and get the spouses of the other two men. When she returns with the other women it demonstrates the impressive change in her character that has occurred throughout the play.

    1. I totally agree. I think that the bet was one of the funniest parts of the play. Lucentio thought he had it in the bag, but he was mistaken. When Katherine came and not Bianca, Lucentio got a taste of Petruchio's medicine.

    2. I disagree. I don't think Petruchio is shamed, I think he is just through with all of the teasing and is wanting to nip it all in the bud with a bet to put the matter to a close.

  7. At the reception for Bianca and Lucentio's wedding, many people were messing with Petruchio, telling him that he will never be able to tame his wife and get her to obey him. He does not agree with them, so he decides to bet on it. He tells them that whoever's wife obeys the husband will win some money, and obviously some bragging rights. They all think that the shrew Kate will never come to her man, so they take the bet. However, when they all call up their wives, all of the wives ignore the husbands, except for the one they all thought was a shrew and the least tamable, Kate. Kate runs to Petruchio, meaning Petruchio wins the bet. After the bet was over, Kate even goes as far as to give a little speech to everyone about how the women should listen to the men and respect and obey their husbands.

  8. The bet happens at Biancas wedding when everyone says that Pertuchio has a shrew for a wife. He makes a bet with them about it and whoever wife was most obedient would win. When the husbands called their wives Kate was the only one who came making Pertuchio the winer of the bet. Not to mention, Kate even gave a speech about why the wives should obey their husbands. 1. Kate being the most obedient is what shocked me the most. Her persona now compared to her beginning self are like 2 different people. And her going to the extent of giving a speech as to why you should appease your husband to the other women seemed unfitting

  9. The bet begins because the Hortensio, Petruchio, and Lucentio were joking about who’s wife was the biggest shrew. Petruchio bets the others to see who’s wife is most obedient by seeing which wife comes first when they’re called. Kate comes back first, which surprises everyone because she was considered the worst shrew of all. Lucentio’s and Hortensio’s wives were sitting by the fire talking. When Kate comes back, she begins to tell the other two wives the duty of a wife is to be obedient and that they basically failed. It’s as if Kate has been brainwashed because of Petruchio’s abuse. 1. I completely agree with you. Kate completely changed since the beginning of the play. It is almost as if Kate and Bianca completely switched roles. At the beginning of the play, Kate had an awful personality and Bianca was "tamed", However, at the end of the play Kate was completely tamed and Bianca was not. Also, I believe that anyone would have changed if they had gone through what Petruchio put them through. (R. Luxemburger 7)

  10. Basically, the bet was to see who had the most obedient wife. There was a silver lining between this and a dog show, as both focus primarily on behavior of the woman/dog and in this case, these are treated the same. Whoever had the more obedient wife won the bet, along with cash. The surrounding people remembered how Kate acted in the past, so they thought she would clearly lose the bet. However, things change. 11. At the banquet, all the guys are giving Petruchio a hard time because they think that he got the short end of the stick in marrying Katherine. So, Petruchio proposes a bet to see who of the three newlyweds have the most obedient wife. They each were to call for their wife and whoever's wife came first was the winner. Lucentio and Hortensio both are let down by their wives when they refuse to come. However, Katherine comes right away proving that she is not the shrew of the wives. This even leads her to say a whole speech about how being submissive is the best way to be. Naturally, Petruchio is happy about winning and gloats about it by saying "Marry, peace it bodes, and love, and quiet life, And awful rule, and right supremacy, And, to be short, what not that’s sweet and happy?" (Act V, Scene ii, 117-119). The three male characters who start this bet are friends who I think could be comparable to today's boys. They are basically competing to see who has the best wife to show who truly is the best out of all of them. I believe men do this today too. So, in a way they are not much different from us. I believe by showing Kate as being the only one to come Shakespeare is saying that their marriage has a happy outlook. However, the other two may have a long road ahead of them because they are not as submissive as Kate is. Therefore, Shakespeare is foreshadowing the future of their marriages. (R. Luxemburger 7)

    1. I like how you compared them to today's teenage boy majority. Men obviously don't do it quite so bluntly as they did in the play but they still knowingly and unknowingly compete against each other to see who can be with the "best" girl/woman. (A. Phillips 2)

  12. The three relationships in the play display a variety of emotions. Bianca and Lucentio's relationship is pure love, they're so in love and invested in each other to the point in which they believe they cannot live without the other. However, Kate and Pertruchio's relationship displays no true love at any level. For Pertruchio chases wealth, and Kate is just pressured and wants to be married to please everyone. While Gremio and Hortensio started out enemies, they learn to grow closer and become very civilized. Shakespeare uses these different love stories to display the effects of the different relationships. Also to educate people of a healthy or unhealthy relationship (K. Small 6th).

  13. In act 5, a major case of mistaken identity happens. While Tranio (pretending to be Lucentio) is talking to Baptista with his "father" (a random merchant is pretending to be Vicentio), the REAL Vicentio comes to visit his son (who is supposed to be in school). He argues that he is the real father and that Tranio has killed his son and taken his place. In an effort to restore order to the wedding plan, Tranio orders Vicentio to be taken to jail, however the real Lucentio comes, just from marrying Bianca in secret, reveals he's the real Lucentio and straightens everything out. Although Baptista is very confused with the whole situation, he believes that Lucentio is wealthy enough to be a good husband for his younger daughter.

  14. The bet is at Bianca's wedding and is between Petruchio and the other husbands attending. the bet is made to see who has the most obedient wife by seeing who would come when called first. because Kate has the reputation of being the disobedient vixen like shrew of a wife the other husbands agree to the bet and are all surprised when Kate it the first to appear showing them she has been tamed. 15. The bet was to see which of the 3 husbands had the most obedient wife. Petruchio was being teased he had the worst wife, so he made the bet. Each husband would summon their wife to him, and whoever came would win some money. When all 3 called, only Kate came running to the summon, while Bianca ignored Lucentio and the widow ignored Hortensio. Petruchio is congratulated on his "taming" of Kate, and she even gives a speech at the end. One line within it is shown below.
"...Thy husband is thy lord, thy life, thy keeper,
Thy head, thy sovereign, one that cares for thee..."
