Richmond is giving a speech to his troops. Based on Richmond's speech, explain
what is motivating him to go to battle.
·
Richard gave a list of his motivations back at the beginning of Act I,
scene i. Re-read this soliloquy and
decide if you think that was his real motivation for all his actions thus far.
Why or why not? Use cited evidence to
support your decision.
·
Discussion: How do motivations matter? Why do the motivations of the
characters in the play matter? Do the motivations of any characters besides
Richard and Richmond matter? Is everyone simply reacting to Richard? Do they
have their own motivations for their actions?
Option 2-
- · What does Shakespeare seem to think makes a hero? Based on this, is there a hero in the play?
- · What is your definition of a hero? Identify at least one person who fits this definition, and provide evidence.
- · Could the hero in this play be a tragic hero? A tragic hero is one who moves the reader to pity, since his misfortune is greater than he deserves, and he creates fear since his tragedy might easily befall one of us. To what end is there a tragic hero in this play? Who would the tragic hero be, and why?
Discuss one of the women as the hero of the play. Provide cited evidence.
Shakespeare seems to think a hero is someone that has royalty, that goes through a downfall, and that the downfall is a effect of the choices he makes. The hero in this play in Richard. The definition of a hero to me is someone that pushes through challenges and has courage, outstanding awards, and noble qualities. One person that fits this definition is Richard because even though the tasks he perform are evil, he shows courage, never backs down, and always stands up for what he believes in. The hero could be a tragic hero in this story because Richard uses the killing of others to create fear because of the downfall he faced but the reader does not give him pity because of what he does. A women that could be a hero in this play is Queen Margaret because she curses others in the book and the reader will agree with her because of what the people that she cursed done.

BULLET ONE:
ReplyDeleteRichmond gives a speech to his troops before heading into battle telling his men that they are defending their home country from a fearsome tyrant and murder.
BULLET TWO:
In act I, scene i Richard laments his physical deformity's and vows to make everyone around him just as miserable "...since i cannot prove a lover to entertain these fair well-spoken days, i am determined to prove a villain" (Act I, scene i). he also speaks of his thirst for power implying that he wanted the crown "plots i have laid... to set my brother Clarence and the king in deadly hate... Clarence hath not another day to live... god take Edward... leave the world for me to bustle in" (Act I, scene i). based on what Richard says throughout the entire soliloquy I believe that his motives were the same as his stated motives.
BULLET THREE:
motivations matter deeply because they are what makes our actions either heroic or villainous.
If Richard wanted the crown because he believed that his brothers would rule in tyranny that may be a bit more honorable than simply lusting for power. other characters motivations mater as well in the play. Richard III provided Queen Elizabeth plenty of motivation to wish for his head on a pike and this lead her to loathe him. Other characters have their own motivations however, if they are around Richard III their motivation is mainly to stay alive.

A hero in Shakespearean literature tends to be brave, noble and sometimes rich. An example of this could be Romeo, he comes from a wealthy family and was brave enough to kill himself because he thought his wife was dead. Based on this Clarence could be a hero. My definition of a hero is a person that is the protagonist of the story, is brave, is accomplished and admired by others. Again, Clarence could be considered a hero. Not only does he come from a wealthy family, he is brave by staying calm and almost talking his killers out of killing him when they come for him. Also Anne could be considered a hero. She also comes from a wealthy family and shows bravery. An example of this bravery is "Either heaven with lightning strike the murderer dead, Or Earth gape wide and eat him quick." (Act1, Sc2, Line67-69)
ReplyDeleteClarence could also be a tragic hero. He almost causes pity while trying to talk his way out of being killed in cold blood. However, he only slightly fits into the requirements of a tragic hero.

A hero in Shakespeare's eyes seems to be someone who, despite all odds, overcomes an obstacle for the good of someone other than his or herself. Therefore, Richmond could be considered a hero, because after defeating Richard in battle, there was a new era of peace for all of England. I would define a hero in a very similar way- someone who does everything in their power to accomplish something to benefit others. However, Richard could be considered a tragic hero. For example, towards the beginning of the play he goes on about his deformity and how it is the cause for his ill behavior.

Shakespeare seems to think that a hero is someone who makes a profound change to the story. So in this case, yes there is a hero in this play. I believe a hero is someone with admirable qualities, and who puts others before himself. Richmond lays it all on the line in the Battle at Bosworth Field in order to bring England to peace. Yes, the hero could be a tragic hero. I believe Richard is the tragic hero. He is the tragic hero because he tries to do what he sees is right, and ends up dying in his attempt. "For happy wife, a most distressed widow; For joyful mother, one that wails the name; ... Thus hath the course of justice whirl'd about And left thee
ReplyDeletebut a very prey to time" (Act 4, scene 4) Margaret is a voice or reason and morality in the play, and finally gets to see the demise of richard.

Richard is motivated by his desire to cleanse the land of the filth and maintain his position as king. No these were not his real motivations as they change at the end. Without motivation life would be meaningless. They would be no reason to do anything and nothing would be accomplished.
ReplyDeleteIn this story, Shakespeare shows that a hero is someone who is reality to or has royalty, someone that goes through a downfall some part of the story, and his downfall happened because of a bad choice he has made before. Richard the Third is obviously suppose to be the hero in this story. The definition of a hero to me is someone that is fighting for a good cause and no matter the obstacles that stand in his way he will always fight through and won't let anyone get in his way. Richard fits my definition of a hero in the way that even though that he was doing was because pos his greediness and many of the actions he did were evil he did show fight for his cause and did not let anyone come in his way until his last battle. The hero could be a tragic hero because the Richard is born with a disability but the reader does not give him any pity because of the very dark and evil actions he does in this story. A women that could be a hero in this play is Queen Margaret in the way that she curses people for doing bad things and the reader could see her as a hero for doing this.

Shakespeare believes that a hero is someone who overcomes challenges and it does not matter whether overcoming those obstacles made the "hero" good or evil. In my eyes, a hero is someone who works hard to help others in need and never fails to be there for someone in danger and also wears a cape. Superman is a hero who always saves people in danger, helps the needy and he wears a cape. The hero in this play is definitely a tragic hero because Richard was cursed with deformities, but still prevailed and became king when all the odds were stacked against him. AGranger2
