Blog #4- Julius Caesar, Act III

Act III:  In order to understand how Antony appeals to the people and convinces them to turn against Brutus and the conspirators, it is important to know how he used ethos, logos, and pathos to appeal to his audience.  Read Antony’s entire speech (omitting the lines of other characters) and identify one example of each form of appeal.  Explain and cite.

  1. Antony appealed to ethos by saying "He was my friend, he was faithful and just to me." This is showing his credibility because people might still like Caesar and then they would believe what Antony will say. He appeals to pathos by saying "My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, and I must pause until it returns to me.(he weeps)" It appeals to the emotions of he crowd because they see Antony devastated by Caesars death. His appeal to logos is "But here's a paper wit Caesar's seal on it. I found it in his room it is his will." This makes the crowd curious about what is in his will. The will gave the people money so they believe that Caesar was a great person. C.Fields(5)

  2. Ethos- "
Logos-"Caesar brought many prisoners of war home to Rome, whose ransoms filed the public treasury. Did this action of Caesar seem ambitious?" (III,ii,83-85)
Pathos-"When poor people cried, Caesar wept with them-ambition should be more unfeeling than that," (III,ii,86-87)

  3. Logos: " When poor people cried, Caesar wept with them----- ambition should be more unfeeling than that, yet Brutus says that Caesar was ambitious , and Brutus is an honorable man." ( Act III, Scene ii, pg 113). Anthony uses proof of Caesar being non ambitious to contradict with the idea that Brutus is trying to portray about the fallen leader. This type of logic helps persuade the people to turn against Brutus.
Pathos: " Then his mighty heart burst , and covering up his face in his cloak , great Caesar fell at the pedestal of Pompey's statue." ( Act III, Scene ii, pg 119). Anthony uses the vivid telling of Caesar's death at the hand of conspirators, to tap into the emotional side of the Roam citizens to mourn the lost of their leader and turn against the killers.
Ethos: " I don't come here, friends, to arouse your strong feelings. I am not a a public speaker, as Brutus is , but, as you all know me , only a plain, blunt man who loves his friend Caesar." ( Act III, scene ii, pg 121). Anthony uses this statement to reassure the roman citizens that he is on their side. Just like the citizens, Anthony had a love for Caesar this allows them to trust him.

  4. Ethos: "I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him."
Logos:"For Brutus is an honorable man; So are they all, all honorable men."
Pathos:""My heart is in the coffin there with Caesar, And I must pause till it comes back to me.

    1. I agree with your ethos and logos examples. I think your example of pathos more so appeals to Anthony's emotions but at the same time this could cause the audience to feel sympathy for Anthony's lost. AZac-Williams6

  6. Logos: " I thrice presented him a kingly crown, which he did thrice refuse. Was this ambition?" (Act 3, Scene 2, pg 112). Caesar showed proof that Caesar was not an ambitious man because he had denied the crown three times. Which any ambitious man would accept.
Pathos: "When the poor have cried, Caesar has wept." (Act 3, Scene 2, pg 112). Antony uses this to emotions about how when they cried how they were in need. Caesar was upset that his people where in need.
Ethos: "He was my friend faithful and just to me." This show that Caesar trusted him and help show the people that Antony is a trust worthy man.

  7. Logos: "You all did see that on the Lupercal I thrice presented him a kingly crown, which he did thrice refuse." (Act III, Scene ii, pg 112) Antony explains using logic that Caesar was not an ambitious king and more of a righteous one. He uses this to persuade the people against Brutus who convinced them earlier.
Ethos: "But here's a parchment with the seal of Caesar; I found it in his closet, 'tis his will."(Act III, Scene ii, pg 114) Antony uses this parchment as credibility towards Caesar's actions using it to show that Caesar was aiming for good deeds from the start of his reign
Pathos: "O now you weep, and I perceive you feel the dint of pity. These are gracious drops. Kind souls, what weep you when you but behold our Caesar's vesture wounded" Look you here, here is himself, married as you see with traitors." (Act III, Scene ii, pg 118) He presents the body of Caesar to the audience and tells how his dear friends betrayed him even though he was a righteous man.
