  1. Sisters Kate and Bianca has a relationship that is more hate/hate rather then love/hate like usual siblings; but they're not like the average siblings. The sisters are rather spiteful towards each other with Kate being abusive towards Bianca, tying her to a chair and slapping her across the face. This doesn't show a progressive relationship between the 2. As known Bianca isn't the shrew of the play so they are complete opposite of one another.

    1. I agree with you. I believe that maybe the reason they didn’t like each other was because they were complete opposites. Also Bianca may have strongly disliked Kate because Kate was holding her back. If Kate didn’t get married, Bianca wouldn’t be allowed to get married. Unlike Kate, Bianca wanted to get married. 2. I totally agree with you, their relationship is very usual and unusual at the same time. I feel like that is how their going to act throughout the whole play. (D.Bonea 1)

    3. I agree that they don't have a love/hate relationship. I would definitely say it is more geared toward hate. Normal siblings may confront each other over guys they both like, but I've never seen sisters tie each other up and strike each other. I wonder how their roles will be toward each other at the end of the play.

  2. Katharina and Bianca:
Bianca and Katharina are sisters. They are the daughters of a rich man of Padua named Baptista. Katharina and Bianca don’t get along. In the beginning of Act II, Katharina and Bianca are having an argument over suitors. Katharina also has Bianca tied up to a chair. Their conversation gets so heated that Katharina slaps Bianca. It's normal for siblings to fight but that violence wasn’t normal. They were also complete opposites of each other. Bianca wanted to find someone to marry while Katharina didn’t. Katharina and Bianca genuinely disliked each other. (C.Gunn 2)

    1. I definitely agree with you. There relationship is very simple, yet complex. The fact that they are sisters makes them tied to each other forever, but because Bianca cannot get married until Katherine does, puts a strain on their relationship. They get very angry at each other so much throughout the play that Katherine strikes Bianca because she is "selfish" and will not choose a suitor.

  3. Kate and Bianca are sisters and are complete opposites. Like all siblings Kate and Bianca argue and fight but they're fighting is a more aggressive and unforgiving kind of fight. They not only verbally fight but it also gets physical. Kate is very rude and hurtful to Bianca and she even takes it as far as tying Bianca's hands just to get her to tell which suitors she liked best and after Bianca responds Kate hits her. Kate and Bianca don't have a relationship the only thing they have in common is their father.

    1. I agree with this all except for the fact that they don't have a relationship; i think they have one its just ruled more by there hatred to each other then it is by anything else. There relationship is more like a relationship you'd have with an enemy.(A. Phillips 2)

    2. I agree with you. Their relationship is very aggressive. Unfortunately from what we know Bianca is the victim for most of it all because Kate is jealous, the only thing Bianca has allowed herself to do is verbally argue with her sister.

  6. In the relationship Kate and Bianca are sisters yet they do not act like such. Kate is the hotheaded temper, vicious and sharp tongued sister. She is jealous of her sister Bianca. Bianca is the sweet and loving sister. It seems Kate is the aggressor in most cases of their arguments. Kate states to the Bianca "you will have Gremio to keep you fair " and Bianca retaliates "is it for him you do envy me so?" (Act II. Scene I, page 28) Several men adore Bianca like Lucentio while Kate is their worst nightmare. This is maybe the main reason Pertruchio is wanting to marry Kate for her fortune only. As you can see these two are totally different. (C. Grant 2)

  7. Bianca and Kate know each other simply because they are sisters. The interactions between these two are not very good. Many guys want to court Bianca because she is beautiful and not "rough", like her sister. On the other hand, no one wants to court Kate because she is very independent and speaks her mind, which was unusual for women back then. This causes friction between the characters because their father states Bianca cannot marry till Kate does even tho Bianca wants to get married and Kate does not. (1.S.Rice.)

    1. I agree that they know each other because they are sisters. Most of us know that they would probably not associate if it weren't for their blood line. But, yes the sisters hatred for each other is much more than usual siblings. The fact the father is using Katherine as a key to Bianca gives us the impression she is lesser and the dad might favor Bianca more. (1.A.McIntyre.)

    1. I agree with the fact that Bianca and Kate's relationship is anything but sweet. However, I think that their father won't allow Bianca to marry while Kate isn't is because he is embarrassed by her actions. Also, I don't think that Bianca truly wants to get married; she just tries not to be as loud and violent as her sister.

    2. I do not believe that Kate being independent is the reason why people don't want to marry her. I think it is because of how she treats everyone else. Also, I don't think that Kate preventing Bianca from getting married is what causes friction. I believe they argue because Bianca is liked by everyone and Kate is not. I think that is what cause friction between them. (R. Luxemburger 7)

  9. Kate and Bianca have drawn jealous throughout the act for each other because one sister gets treated better unlike the other. They have one of those love/hate relationships but also very torturous when Kate hits, pulls her hair, and ties Bianca's hands. Kate and Bianca are totally different from each other; Bianca is the innocent good girl that listens to what people say and Kate is the rough, unpleasant, speaks her own mind one that every one hates and that is what makes her the "shrew". Also the fact that the dad favors the younger sister, Bianca over Kate, is one of the main reason why they are so ugly towards each other and that causes a bunch of unpleasant issues. (D.Bonea 1)

    1. I feel that the favoring of Bianca over Katherine might be the reason why Katherine is so bitter and hot headed and tempered. Obviously, she is the outsider in the family and in this society alone. That could be why she feels so betrayed and always has her guard up. (C. Grant 2)

  10. Kate and Petruchio:

In Act Two, we meet Kate. She is very violent towards her sister, and verbally violent towards everyone else. Petruchio is the man counter-part to Kate. They have a strange relationship, where Petruchio sees her as more of a challenge than a soul mate. They have a weird conversion where they are going back and forth with insults that makes you wonder why Petruchio and Kate wouldn't make the perfect pair. They end up engaged with Baptista's heavy approval. I think that this match is going to cause some major problems later in the book.

  11. Kate and Bianca have an abusive relationship based on the single fact that they are sisters. Kate is the rude abrasive disobedient one while Bianca is extremely obedient, polite, and sweet to everyone. if they were put in a high school setting were they had never met Kate would be the rude uncaring senior and Bianca would be the nice scared to get in trouble freshman. Kate falls more into the rule of a "mean girl" while Bianca falls into the "good girl" category. (A. Phillips 2)

  12. The relationship between Kate and Bianca is complex because they are sisters. From the beginning of act two, you could tell that they have a love-hate relationship. Because they are sisters, their relationship is more complex. Act II, scene I sets up the scene by having Bianca's hands tied by Kate. Kate is trying to make Bianca choose which suitor she prefers. While Bianca tries to express to Kate that she has not chosen yet, Kate does not believe her. Bianca then proceeds to offer Hortensio to Kate, which shows how Bianca does love Kate, even though she a shrew. After they go on arguing for a few lines, Kate strikes Bianca in a moment of anger and frustration. Kate's anger also comes from jealousy that Bianca is "daddy's little girl" and can do no harm. The fact that they are sisters makes it harder to get along, because it's like they are always in competition with each other.

  13. Kate and Bianca have a relationship that demonstrates a classic sibling rivalry. There is much animosity between the sisters for a variety of reasons. Kate being the "shrew" she is at the beginning of the story is difficult to get along with for anyone. Their father however made the situation much worse by declaring that Kate must be married before Bianca. This causes a poblem for everyone considering that Kate has absolutely no intention of marrying and no suitors if she did while Bianca on the other hand is an incredibly eligible bride. Bianca's want to get married means nothing until her sister is gone which makes the relatioship very strenuous. 1.j.DiSario

  14. Kate and Bianca are related by their blood line because they are sisters. Their interactions show that they don't always get along. Kate says to be Baptista "She is your treasure, she must have husband." This shows how Kate has a tendency to grow jealous of her sister. Not only is Kate jealous for that reason, she is also jealous because Bianca is the father's favorite and she is very easy going, and sweet while she is not. (A. McIntyre 1)

  15. Bianca and Katherina clearly fight as sisters would. However, it seems that the fighting comes from pure hate in their hearts as if one is jealous of the other. Katherina is also abusive to Bianca and Bianca constantly takes this from her. It may be hard to fight back though, considering Katherina is a hot head and will be willing to torture anybody that comes in her way of what she wants. it is also twisted that Bianca is the one of the sisters that wishes to get married, but she is unable to because of their father's rules. 16. Kate and Petruchio first meet after Kate has injured her music teacher. Before this, Petruchio was telling Kate's father that he would like to marry her. This was only after he knew and insured that Kate had a dowry. When Kate first meets Petruchio, she does not like him at all. From the minute she sees him she starts firing rude remarks at him like ""Moved,” in good time. Let him that moved you hither
Remove you hence. I knew you at the first You were a moveable." (Act II, Scene i, 189-192). She started saying all of this only because he called her Kate and not Katherine. However, he does not stand down like most do when she acts like that he fires back at her. Their banter even goes on for a few minutes. Kate even gets so fed up with him that she hits him, but it does not phase him at all. I think Kate gets so mad because she finally met someone who is not afraid to speak their mind to her which is a reality check for her. I also think it scares her that someone is not afraid of her because she is used to not having people speak to her in the way that she speaks to them. I think Petruchio is not phased by all of this because this is part of the first steps of his plan to tame her. They both seem to be a good match for each other because they are not afraid to be rude to each other (R. Luxemburger 7)

  17. Bianca and Katharina are sisters. They are the daughters of a rich man of Padua named Baptista. Katharina and Bianca have not always been the best of friends and they do not really get along. In Act II, Katharina and Bianca are having arguments all the time.Their conversation gets so heated that Katharina slaps Bianca and things get physical. it is okayfor siblings to fight and then talk it out but that violence wasn’t normal there is obviously a problem boiling over between the 2 of them. They were also complete opposites of each other which could be a reason they do not get along. In the end Bianca wanted to find someone to marry while Katharina did not have interest in men. Katharina and Bianca genuinely did not get along and there was no way of fixing it. (M. York 1st)

  18. Kate and Bianca do not have the normal love\ hate relationships that most sisters have. They argue and use physical aggression towards each other. In the play, Kate ties Bianca to a chair just to get her to tell her what suitor she likes best, while proceeding to hit her. (K.Small 6th).

  19. Kate and Petruchio meet in Padua at Baptista, Kate's father's house. Right off the bat in Act 2, Scene 1, Petruchio has jokes. He says, " Good morrow, Cake; for that's your name, I hear." He calls Kate by a different name just to get under her skin and from there the two are at each other's necks. It seems like they are in a competition, since Petruchio has promised to "tame" her, while Kate has sworn off men for the reasons Petruchio represents. Petruchio's encounter with Kate says that personality wise he's shallow and disgusting seeing as he doesn't take women and their standards seriously. The interactions between the two show that Kate only sees her way and will not budge or lower her expectations. Kate is the "shrew" of the story, but is honestly the most sensible.

  21. Kate and her sister are complete opposites and don't have the normal love/ hate relationships as most siblings would. In this case opposites don't attract. Seeing as how Kate is the "shrew" and Bianca is not. Though Kate is physically brutal to her sister and shows no compassion. Bianca does nothing about this though. In reality Kate is jealous of her sister and takes it out on her. (P. Brown 2nd)

  22. Kate and Bianca. Their connection to each other is that they are blood sisters, though they act nothing like it. In fact, it's more like bloody sisters with the violent acts that occur. For example, Act 2 begins with Kate having Bianca tied down to a chair and interrogating her over which suitor she likes. "Of all thy suitors here I charge thee tell whom thou lovest best. See thou dissemble not." At first I thought people considered Kate to be a shrew because she isn't docile and thinks for herself. Now I see that she is literally a bully and rude to anyone, even her sister. Bianca is painted as a pretty girl who is sweet and the polar opposite of Kate.

  23. Kate and Bianca, they fight just as normal sisters would do. The only true relationship they have though is the fact they are sisters. Both of the sisters are extremely rude to one another. They both show extreme sibling Rivalry that at there age you would think would have been outgrown by now. Katherine slaps Bianca in Act II and things get physical. Normally siblings will scream or yell at one another but eventually talk things out. Clearly the sisters had other ideas and there was a more serious issue going on here then just physical fighting. Kate also seems to be extremely jealous of Bianca, and i think that is what causes the fights to break out. (S. Maughon 2nd)
